Scroll down to see some of the pictures from yet another lovely holiday in Sicily. We flew out by Easyjet on Tuesday 7th May and returned to England on Wednesday 22nd May. We started and ended our stay at our favorite Hotel La Riva in Giardini Naxos, and hired a little Fiat Panda from Europacar. We also spent a few nights in Scoglitti and Noto, and with our friends Enrico and Matilde in Fleri, near Zefferana. The highlight must have been our two nights with them on the island of Volcano. We actually got to climb to the edge of the volcano itself ! :-)
We'll start with the photos from this part of our holiday, shared with Enrico and Matilde. The video is an hour ! :-)
The high speed ferry only took about an hour from Milazo, in the north of Sicily, to the Island of Vulcano ...
View from the balcony of our room in the Hotel Faraglione ...
On arrival you are greeted by the sulpherous stench of the nearby muddy swimming pool ...
The local police are very helpful and will do anything for their friends ....
We start our walk from the town, up the slopes of the volcano ....
We reach the smoking edge of the crater, and the helicopter landing pad, in about an hour ...
You are advised not to check out the bottom of the crater ....
Robin shared a joke with Aleksey from St Petersburg in Russia. Something about the town smelling of rotten eggs :-)
Enrico checks out the view of the town from the helicopter pad ...
View of volcanic islands including Lipari, when we take a hire car tour of the island ...
We have a lovely dinner at Maurizio's, who just loves old money, including Robin's 1000 Italia Lira ...
Matilde and June hold up Robin's "thankyou artwork" after the lovely dinner at Maurizio's in Vulcano.
Matilde shows June some of the earthquake damage at their home in Fleri, near Zefferana. Duke keeps an eye on the puppy ...
Robin shows the damage to his hand, inflicted by the puppy ...
Two pictures of Etna on our second day, with little snow other than the north face. But see later - after rain, hail, and snow !
Trip to Siracusa, the Greek and Roman ruins, and the large cavern called "The Ear of Dionysius". God of Grapes, drinking, theatre, and crazy behaviour :-)
Robin inside the Ear of Dionysius ...
Then there was a thunderstorm, and we took shelter from rain and hail with a party of students ...
When we returned north, we were delighted to see more snow on Etna !
We visited a "horse festival" ...
View from balcony of our room in Hotel Gabbiano in Scoglitti, not far from Punta Secca, the home of Montalbano ...
We visit the old Tuna Factory south east of Noto ....
... and the one legged flamingos in the nearby salt lake ...
The old windmill from which three German soldiers held off the Allies for days during WWII ...
... and the lovely view of Etna from the nearby restaurant ...
Robin has a rest after our long walk into the hills behind Giardini Naxos, including to Villa Panoramica Taormina ....
The old boat near June's favorite sun bathing spot on the beach, opposite Hotel La Riva in Giardini Naxos ...
Sunset in Giardini Naxos, looking back across the bay to Hotel La Riva ...
